Binghamton police say a man whose body was found in a burning house has been positively identified.

Firefighters discovered the body about 35 minutes after they forced their way into the boarded-up building at 2 Pleasant Street on the North Side on the morning of January 15.

Detective Captain Cory Minor said the man was 39-year-old Nathaniel Jenkins. Minor said his death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Minor did not provide a specific cause of the blaze but he said it has been ruled accidental.

Authorities had said people were known to have been staying in what was supposed to be a secure vacant building.

One other man who had been in the house at the time of the fire was evaluated for smoke inhalation. He was not taken to a hospital.

According to a published obituary, Jenkins, who was born in 1984, spent his early years in Norwich with his mother and a brother. He is survived by two young sons.

The obituary notes that Jenkins "struggled with both mental health and addiction during his adult life, yet he would still do his best to help others in his situation try to navigate the best he knew how in the moment."

The obituary also said that despite his homelessness, Jenkins "would still give the little he had off his back so others could eat or have clothing." His dream "was to start his own landscaping business."
