Jerry Marinich has been chosen by Broome County Executive Debra Preston to be director of emergency services.

The 63-year-old Marinich is chairman of the county legislature. He plans to resign from the legislative seat to take the new position.

Marinich, who lives in the town of Chenango, has been a county legislator for 13 years. He has been chairman since 2011.

Marinich worked for the Binghamton Fire Department for three decades.

Preston said she expects the legislature will approve the appointment this month, allowing Marinich to start work as emergency services director on January 1.

The county executive said more than a dozen people applied for the post after Brett Chellis left for a state government job in June.

County EMS coordinator Raymond Serowik has been serving as interim emergency services director.

The legislature next month is expected to appoint a successor to Marinich to represent the Tenth District, which includes the town of Chenango and a section of the town of Fenton.
