Town of Chenango Residents Fight Route 12 Rezoning Proposal
Some people who live in the town of Chenango are speaking out against a proposal to rezone three parcels of land along Route 12.
Quinn Manor LLC is seeking a zoning change for 33 acres on the west side of Upper Front Street. The parcels are north of Peterson Road.
The Chenango town board has scheduled a public hearing on the proposal for Wednesday evening.
Some Chenango Bridge residents are expressing concern about future development that could change the character of the area and generate more traffic.
The land that is currently zoned agricultural would be rezoned as planned development commercial.
Although the current rezoning proposal is for the three parcels of land, opponents note that Quinn Manor owns two other larger adjacent pieces of property. They fear they'll eventually be rezoned and sold to a developer.
One resident who spoke on a WNBF Radio talk program noted a wide array of uses would be permitted if the town board approves the rezoning request.
A woman who lives on Route 12 near the site said "we don't want this to become another Vestal Parkway."
A few signs declaring "No to Rezone" have been posted in the area.
The public hearing on the rezoning proposal is to be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Chenango town hall.
