Lockheed Martin in Owego is giving a boost to a National Weather Service preparedness program.

The agency has recognized the major Tioga County employer as a StormReady Supporter. It's part of an initiative to prepare people for potentially-devastating storms.

National Weather Service meteorologist Erik Heden praised Lockheed for its dedication to the program.

Lockheed security services manager Tom Tammaro noted the Owego area has had a long history of severe weather and flooding. He said the company's support of the program should help ensure that people will be better prepared for future storm-related events.

To be designated a StormReady Supporter, an organization must agree to promote the program. Among other things, it must maintain a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center. It also must agree to conduct community preparedness programs.
