After the Storm: Binghamton Bracing for “Very Cold” Week
As residents of upstate New York and northeastern Pennsylvania began digging out after the weekend snow storm, forecasters were warning them to be prepared for a week of extreme cold.
Most school districts in the Twin Tiers region were closed Monday because of poor travel conditions.
According to the Broome County Executive's office, a travel advisory remained in effect until noon on Monday. Other counties across the region were discouraging unnecessary travel until road conditions improved.
Broome County government offices were scheduled to open at noon on Monday.
National Weather Service forecasters at the Greater Binghamton Airport on Monday said overnight lows will be near 0 with wind chill readings well below zero.
Wind chills of -5 to -15 are likely in northeastern Pennsylvania. While some valley areas will experience the "warmer" end of the wind chills, higher terrain surrounding the valleys could wind up with sustained wind chill readings below -10 for several hours.
Forecasters said the cold pattern will continue throughout this week with most overnight temperatures remaining near 0.
