Trustees on September 3 approved buying United Health Services-owned property on Grand Avenue for $200,000.

The current, outdated DPW building is on Brown Street and has been flooded on several occasions.

The four-acre site for the new public works building at 333 Grand Avenue is the vacant lot that used to be home of the sprawling Philadelphia Sales store at the western end of the street in a mixed-use neighborhood between Helen and Cook Streets.

Some neighbors have balked at the idea of a public works garage on the street, saying they were concerned about the increase heavy-truck traffic, noise and dirt.
