A new analysis from iSelect found New York has the highest cigarette prices in the country, making it the most expensive place in America to smoke. This doesn't really surprise me, what about you?

Cigarette prices are climbing

They found the average pack of cigarettes in New York now costs $14.55 and that adds up fast. The average smoker in New York spends almost $4,000 a year on cigarettes just to maintain their habit. Think about this people, that could cover a vacation, several months of groceries, or a big chunk of rent.

New Yorkers are spending millions

The study found that there are more than 2 million smokers in the Empire State. So overall, smokers are spending more than $563 million every year on cigarettes. That number shows just how expensive smoking has become across the state.

Smoking rates are slowly dropping

There was one bit of positive news in the report. Smoking rates in New York dropped slightly over the past year, as it fell by 0.88%. It isn't much but it is something. The bigger question is: Is it dropping because of the price or they want to take better care of their health.

While that decrease is small, health experts hope the rising cost of cigarettes may encourage more people to quit. For smokers in New York, the price of lighting up has never been higher.
