Paving Project Slows Traffic on Route 201 and Vestal Road

A major resurfacing project has been causing traffic backups on two busy roads in Vestal.

More than two miles of Vestal Road are being repaved between Sycamore Road and Mill Road.

The work, which began Monday, has slowed traffic on Vestal Road when paving operations are underway. Flaggers have been posted at the job site to allow alternating traffic through the work zone. Motorists are delayed a few minutes while vehicles heading in the opposite direction are permitted to travel past paving crews.

The Vestal Road project also affected southbound traffic on Route 201 with vehicles backing up at times.

The paving operations will continue on Wednesday. Motorists should prepare for delays or seek alternate routes.

Drivers also should be alert for uneven lanes in some sections of the work zone.

Ongoing resurfacing could briefly affect access to some side streets off Vestal Road or to some nearby businesses.

Thousands of vehicles use Vestal Road daily to travel to commercial and industrial establishments. Broome County maintains the east-west roadway that many rely on as an alternative to the Vestal Parkway.

The county last year repaved a section of Vestal Road between African and Sycamore roads in conjunction with the opening of a new section of the town's rail trail.
