New York Tax Relief: What You Need To Know About STAR

Are you eligible for the New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) this year?

Today, June 16, 2026, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that close to three million New Yorkers will receive over $2 billion in tax relief this summer and fall through the STAR program.

This program provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners and seniors across the Empire State. There are two ways to receive the benefit - in the form of a tax exemption or a tax credit, via a check in the mail.

According to the Governor's announcement, most eligible New Yorkers will receive a STAR credit between $350 and $600. Most seniors who are eligible will receive a check between $700 and $1,500.

New York State has already begun the program for this year and will be continuing throughout the state this summer and fall. If you are eligible and want to track your delivery or enroll in direct deposit, visit the New York State STAR website.

The STAR property tax relief system is broken down into regions throughout New York State for the total amount of STAR Tax relief and New York State recipients:

Southern Tier - $103.4 million STAR Tax Relief and 153,000 recipients
Central New York - $123.7 million STAR Tax Relief and 173,000 recipients
Finger Lakes - $193.7 million STAR Tax Relief and 274,000 recipients
Mohawk Valley - $62.5 million STAR Tax Relief and 99,000 recipients

STAR credits should be received before the deadline for school tax time. Homeowners can also enroll in the STAR Credit Direct Deposit program through the Homeowner Benefit Portal within the Tax Department’s secure Online Services system.

Governor Hochul notes that to ensure New Yorkers receive their STAR credit by direct deposit this year, enroll as soon as possible. To guarantee timely delivery by direct deposit, homeowners should sign up at least 15 business days before their local school tax due date.
