New Yorkers Are Overwhelmed by Group Chats
If you've ever opened your phone and found 87 unread messages in the family group chat, you're not alone. A survey of more than 1,000 Americans found that group chats have become a part of everyday life, but many people are struggling to keep up with all the messages.
Keeping Up Isn't Easy
More than half of people say it's difficult to keep up with everything happening in their group chats. Whether it's family members sharing updates, friends planning a weekend outing, or coworkers sending messages throughout the day, the notifications can add up quickly.
Some People Feel Pressure to Respond
For many people, group chats come with a sense of responsibility. About 1 in 5 people said they feel like they need to respond to every message that appears in a group chat. That can be exhausting when dozens of messages are flying back and forth throughout the day.
Group Chats Take Up More Time Than You Think
Americans spend an average of 26 minutes every day reading or responding to group messages. That may not sound like much, but over the course of a week, it adds up to more than three hours spent keeping up with group conversations.

Many People Hit the Mute Button
Sometimes the easiest solution is silence. 75% said they have muted a group chat because it became too annoying. If you've ever silenced a family chat during a holiday weekend, you're in good company.
Some People Leave the Chat Entirely
For others, muting isn't enough. More than half of those surveyed said they have left a group chat altogether. Whether it's too many notifications, too much drama, or too many random messages, some people decide they've had enough.
TikToks Are Everywhere
The survey also found that TikTok videos are the most commonly shared type of content in group chats. If your phone is constantly lighting up with funny videos, recipes, pet clips, or dance trends, you're experiencing what many Americans deal with every day
