Ice Cream Provides Cool Boost for Vestal Fire Department
Kids and adults who were passing by a Vestal fire station did a double take when they spotted a mobile ice cream stand.
The colorful trailer was set up in front of Station 4 on the Vestal Parkway for the launch of a new fundraising initiative.
The "Ice Cream Rescue" concept made its debut at the Vestal station. Partners Jamie Mullen of Waverly and Gregory Davis of Ithaca worked to acquire the trailer and outfit it in recent weeks.
Mullen told WNBF News the idea of selling ice cream to help raise money to support local fire departments came following the success of the Firehouse Subs trailers they've been operating in recent years.
Two sandwich trailers have been making the rounds of various fire stations in New York and Pennsylvania.
Mullen said this was a "testing week" for the Ice Cream Rescue format. The trailer was scheduled to be at the Vestal fire station from Monday through Thursday.
With the completion of the soft opening of the concept, the ice cream trailer will be off the road for the next couple of weeks while the partners evaluate the operation
Then in early August, the Ice Cream Rescue unit will begin showing up at other fire stations around the region. Mullen expects it will make appearances at the Chenango Bridge, Chenango, Prospect Terrace and Endwell fire stations in coming weeks.
