
Homer Woman Accused of Attacking Police at Suspicious Fire Scene
A Cortland County resident was sent to jail after she allegedly kicked and punched police officers at the scene of a fire.
Authorities said 47-year-old Kyna Malchak of Homer was arrested early Monday.
According to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office, Malchak was ordered to move away from a structure fire on Sunday. The blaze was on James Street in the village of Homer.
The woman allegedly refused to comply with officers. She is accused of kicking and punching one officer who also was being attacked by Malchak's dog.
Malchak also allegedly assaulted another officer before she was taken into custody.
The officers were treated at the hospital for undisclosed injuries. Their names were not released.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Malchak has been charged with two felony counts of assault and a misdemeanor count of assault. She also faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
Malchak was arraigned Monday morning. She was ordered held at Cortland County Jail on $1,000 bail.
Investigators said the fire is considered suspicious. The sheriff's office is being assisted by the Homer Police Department and New York State fire investigators.
