Members of a Johnson City church have decided to sell the landmark property in the heart of the village.

Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church has been a fixture at 308 Main Street for the past century.

George F. Johnson made what's described as "a generous donation" to support the construction of a church and social house that would be named in memory of his mother.

The social hall was completed in 1925 and the new church building was dedicated in June 1927. But 98 years later - with rising costs and declining membership - a decision was made to put the property at Main and Baldwin streets on the market.

Shelby Winchell, a spokesperson for the Upper New York Conference of the United Methodist Church, said members of the Johnson City church voted overwhelmingly in favor of selling the property.

It's not known when the church buildings and associated parking lot will be officially on the market but the property will be listed soon.

The church is located across the street from the Johnson City post office. The property is just east of new addition to Wilson Medical Center that opened last year.

The church gym has a unique floor made of leather which was used by Endicott Johnson shoe factories.

The church will be open to the public next weekend as part of the annual Sacred Sites Open House event in Broome County. Sarah Jane Johnson Church will welcome visitors on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
