Two single-family homes could soon be built on downtown Binghamton property once owned by Brooklyn developer Isaac Anzaroot.

Broome County Habitat for Humanity wants to acquire two parcels on Fayette Street from the city.

The lots were cleared last September when abandoned apartment houses were demolished as part of an effort to fight blight in Binghamton.

Lateisha Judge, executive director of the local Habitat organization, told city councilmembers the goal is to construct houses on the now-vacant site.

Judge noted there are new efforts to revitalize the neighborhood, which is home to the new headquarters of VINES, which oversees local community gardens.

Two city councilmembers expressed concern that the multiple unit apartment buildings that had been located on the adjacent Fayette Street parcels would be replaced by structures that would be single-family homes.

Judge told WNBF News that developing multi-unit houses is not part of the Habitat for Humanity model. She said she was surprised by the comments made by lawmakers during a recent council work session.

Judge said a councilmember has presented a list of several alternative sites for a future single-family Habit project. She said she still hopes the council will agree to sell the Fayette Street parcels so the organization can move quickly to build homes for two more families.
