First Look Inside Binghamton “Tiny Homes” for Veterans
Broome County residents have been given an opportunity to see the recently-constructed "tiny homes" for local veterans.
The ten residential units are part of a $12.2 million project that features a facility that provides a centralized location for veterans services and support.
Offices in the Timothy M. Grippen Veterans Resource Center opened in September.
The center is located on Frederick Street on Binghamton's North Side. It's named in honor of Grippen, who served eight years as Broome County executive. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star with Valor and three Purple Hearts. He died in October 2021.
Grippen's daughter, Kara, was on hand at the center's opening ceremony Tuesday to unveil a sign bearing her father's name.
County Executive Jason Garnar noted it took nearly a decade of planning to make the resource center and the residential community a reality.
Eight of the ten houses on the site have been assigned. The residents for the remaining two two-bedroom tiny homes have yet to be selected.
The first veterans are expected to move in to their new homes next week.
The residential area will be managed by Soldier On, a Masschusetts-based support group.
