Construction has started on a new church complex in the town of Union.

Saint Athanasius Catholic Church is building the facility a few miles away from its current location on Shady Drive in Endwell. It's been there since 1990.

The church's traditional Latin Mass draws many people from the Binghamton area and a significant number who travel some relatively long distances.

David DeCristo, who has been a member of the church for more than 35 years, is overseeing construction of the new facility.

The 4,800-square-foot structure is being built on Utica Street in Endwell. DeCristo currently owns the site, which he plans to donate to the church.

DeCristo said the church searched for an appropriate location for the new complex for about three years before choosing the site.

Construction on the $1.3 million project began in August. DeCristo expects the work will take another 10 to 12 months to complete.

The new facility will include a parish hall and classroom space. The church will have 69 parking spaces - a significant increase over the off-street parking area available at the current site on Shady Drive.

DeCristo said there also will be an outdoor area at the new church where children will be able to play.

Plans call for the Shady Drive property to be sold after operations begin at the Utica Street site.
