Construction is moving forward on a major residential project that's being built across the street from Maine-Endwell Senior High School.

An 80-unit apartment complex is rising in what had been a vacant lot on Hooper Road, just south of the Marian Apartments.

CDS Housing of Webster originally proposed a building that would have had 115 apartments. A CDS affiliate acquired the six-acre parcel for $475,000 two years ago.

Some people who live in a quiet neighborhood west of the site had expressed opposition to the project shortly after the initial plans were made public.

The town of Union planning board ultimately approved of a scaled-down version of the original project.

Initial site preparation to build what will be a four-story structure started last October.

New York state is providing nearly $15 million for the project. The Broome County Industrial Development Agency last August approved a grant of $400,000 to support the housing initiative.

The complex will include 40 units with supportive services for older residents. It also will have eight apartments with a lease preference for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Project superintendent Brian Borth of Christa Construction said work has been continuing at a good pace, although the recent rainy weather has slowed things a bit.

The project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of next year.
