Endicott Mayor Bertoni Will Not Seek Fourth Term
Twelve years as Endicott mayor is enough. That's what John Bertoni has decided.
Bertoni, who turned 70 in December, has announced he won't be seeking reelection in November. The Democrat was first elected mayor in 2008. Four years ago, he won a third term running unopposed.
Bertoni recently informed the village board of his decision. He said his service to the community has spanned over the last few decades, starting in 1980 when he began a six-year stint as a trustee.
Bertoni later served 10 years as Union town supervisor and three years on the Union-Endicott school board.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Friday, Bertoni noted he's been dealing with health issues in recent years. He underwent heart surgery about one year ago.
When he announced he was running for reelection in 2015, Bertoni said he still had the "energy and the drive" to continue to work to make things better in Endicott. But now, the mayor said, "it's time."
Bertoni said "twelve years as mayor has been great." But, he added, now he's looking forward to being able to do some different things.
