Endicott Firefighters Honored for Actions at Residential Blaze
Two members of the Endicott Fire Department have received special recognition for their life-saving actions at the scene of a blaze that raced through a house.
The Broome County Firefighters' Association has named Chris Sampson and Matthew Griswold the winners of the group's 2021 "Firefighter of the Year" award.
Firefighter Sampson and Inspector Griswold helped to battle the blaze that erupted at 103 Parsons Avenue on the morning of May 11.
Sampson pulled fellow firefighter Scott Goforth through a hole he fell through after a stairwell between the first and second floors of the burning building collapsed.
Griswold went to the second floor of the house after learning someone was inside the structure. He found a man asleep in a smoke-filled bedroom and brought him out of the building.
In recommending Sampson for the award, Goforth wrote that without his colleague's instinct, skill and strength, he would have wound in the basement of the burning house.
Paul Higgins, who was the on-duty captain who responded to the fire, wrote that Griswold's "prompt, professional and completely selfless actions are a credit to both himself and the Endicott Fire Department."
