Crowds returned to The Cider Mill in Endicott as the iconic business opened its doors two months earlier than usual.

The big red building that's been a landmark on Nanticoke Avenue in the Union District for decades was busy on Friday during its first season under new ownership.

When members of the Burke family revealed in early April that they had acquired The Cider Mill from the Ciotoli family, they announced they planned to open the place on May 30.

Workers spent the last several weeks getting things set up - inside and outside - for the new season. The business has typically started its season in the first week of August.

The Cider Mill's Brent Natzle said people had already gathered outside the building before the 7 a.m. opening.

Doughnuts, candy apples, pies and other specialty goods were available as usual, along with some new items in a gift shop area in The Cider Mill lobby. Hershey's ice cream also is being offered for the first time.

New picnic tables have been set up for visitors to enjoy their treats outdoors.

Cider lovers will have to wait until mid-summer to enjoy the beverage. Cider production is expected to start in early August.

The Cider Mill is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. The plan is to keep the operation running through late December, a few weeks later than in the past.
