Calling All Designers: Help Shape The New City Flag Of Norwich
This sounds like a fun thing to do for any age group.
According to the City of Norwich, New York website, the city has begun a Norwich Flag Initiative. They are looking for creative designs for a new city flag.
The website notes:
A City flag is meant to elevate community pride and represent the history and culture of our unique community – to show who we are and who we want to be as a City. - City of Norwich
This isn't something you get a chance to do normally. The Norwich Flag Initiative Committee will make its decision based on five principles of flag design.
The five principles from the website "Good" Flag, "Bad Flag" include:
1. Keep It Simple
2. Use Meaningful Symbolism
3. Use 2 to 3 Basic Colors
4. No Lettering or Seals
5. Be Distinctive or Be Related and avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.
The City of Norwich states that while the five principles are not rules, deviation from the guidelines should be made with purpose. Anyone is welcome to submit a flag design, even if you are not a resident of Norwich, New York, although residency may be a factor in the selection of the final decision.
Your design should be representative of the City of Norwich. Include an explanation of the elements chosen. Avoid elements already associated with other entities such as "Tornados" which is associated with the Norwich School District, for example.
The deadline to submit your flag design is February 16, 2024. The final design will be announced on March 19, 2024 and the chosen flag design will be adopted by the Norwich Common Council on April 16, 2024.
Have fun designing the flag, and good luck! For more details, information, and how to submit your design, visit the City of Norwich, New York website.
