CarFit is a national program designed to provide a check on how well older drivers work together with their vehicle.  The program uses a 12-point checklist to assess the operational connection between older drivers and the vehicles they drive.l

Broome West Senior Center is going to host a CarFit Event on Monday, September 16 from 11:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.  The center is located at 2801 Wayne Street in Endwell.

According to information from the Broome County Health Department CarFit is a program that was developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.  Many changes can occur as people age.  Vision can change, especially when driving at night.  Strength may vary and range of motion can become reduced.  All of these things can reduce the ability to drive safely.

Not only can driving safety become reduced, but older drivers are more susceptible to serious or fatal injuries from car crashes.  Aging bodies can incur severe injury quicker in many cases.

Trained CarFit volunteers will be on hand to conduct the event.  Anyone interested in taking part in the 12-point checklist can call (607) 778-2807.  Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.
