Broome County KFC Restaurant Closes After 56 Years

Even as two Chick-fil-A restaurants are preparing to open in the Binghamton area, one long-time local purveyor of a chicken-based menu has shut down.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at 237 Main Street on Binghamton's West Side closed its doors Monday. The eatery had operated at that location since 1970.

The restaurant was one of about three dozen KFC units operated by the Kirmani Group of Queens. The company also owns other KFC restaurants in Broome and Tioga counties.

A manager of the Main Street location said business had dropped off at the restaurant in recent years and the operation no longer was sustainable.

People familiar with the situation said the site will be sold and may be used for a new seafood restaurant in the future.

The sudden closure of the KFC location caught customers by surprise. One man pulled up to pick up food he had ordered on the KFC app only to discover the place was no longer in operation.

He drove to Binghamton's other KFC location on Robinson Street on the East Side to try to obtain the food he had ordered. He later told WNBF News that restaurant did not fill his order.

The disappointed customer said he tried to obtain a $22 refund via the app but was unsuccessful.
