The average price of diesel fuel in the Binghamton market has hit a record high and more increases are expected in the next couple of months.

According to the latest AAA fuel price report, diesel in the region now is selling for an average of $6.58 a gallon. Monday's price is the highest recorded average in Binghamton ever.

The price survey shows the cost of diesel now is $2.65 a gallon higher than one year ago.

Diesel prices in the region can vary widely by location. The credit price at the TA Travel Center on Upper Court Street in Kirkwood was $6.91 a gallon. Prices were generally lower at retailers located a greater distance from area highways.

One owner-operator from the state of Maine expressed exasperation at the rapid rise in the cost of diesel over the last several months.

He said although prices are high in New York state, they are even higher in Pennsylvania. He said he recently paid more than $7 a gallon for diesel there.

The driver noted some people are supporting a strike by truckers starting October 1 to protest high prices. But he said such an action likely would only hurt independent operators.

He pointed out that large trucking companies aren't being affected quite as drastically because they typically have fleet discounts with retailers.

As diesel prices soar, the cost of gasoline continues to rise. According to AAA, the average price in the Binghamton area for regular was $4.49 a gallon. That's $1.33 a gallon higher than a year ago.
