BJ's Wholesale Club to Open Johnson City Store at Oakdale Commons

Another major tenant has been announced for the Oakdale Commons shopping complex in Johnson City.

BJ's Wholesale Club said the store will be one of five locations that will be opened in a new round of expansion.

The unit at the former Oakdale Mall is expected to be a 99,000-square-foot store that will be built at the spot where The Bon-Ton had operated until it closed in 2018.

Demolition crews last month began tearing down what had been an 80,000-square-foot store at the site. It first opened as a Fowler's department store in October 1975.

Marc Newman, a partner in the Oakdale Commons development team, is looking forward to the new BJ's Wholesale Club store in Johnson City. He told WNBF News "we're excited and we think it'll be good for the community."

The Massachusetts-based membership warehouse club operator did not announce when the Johnson City store would open. Newman said he expected it would be in early 2024.

In addition to the Broome County store, BJ's Wholesale Club said new operations are planned in Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.

According to a company news release, the new stores will include a gas station which will provide fuel discounts for club members.

BJ's Wholesale Club now operates 237 stores in the eastern United States.
