It was rough going for people trying to navigate sidewalks around Broome County more than 24 hours after the heavy snow stopped falling.

While most streets, bridges and parking lots were cleared of snow on Tuesday, many sidewalks across the Binghamton area remained impassible for those walking or those who use wheelchairs.

The big storm posed challenges for residential and commercial property owners. The task of cleaning up after the snowstorm also proved a major task for municipalities.

In Endicott, it appeared most of the village-maintained sidewalks had been cleared Tuesday morning but there were some instances where it was very difficult for people to use marked crosswalks.

One notable issue was a high-profile crosswalk in front of Union-Endicott High School.

Traffic on East Main Street is regulated with a recently-installed system that enables pedestrians to activate a red signal to permit safe crossing. But the button was inaccessible and the crosswalk was unusable Tuesday morning due to plowed snow.

A few minutes after a WNBF News reporter began photographing the condition, a village plow truck arrived to clear the area.

Rob Kaczynski, the village street and parks supervisor, Tuesday afternoon explained that a smaller-sized Ventrac vehicle normally would have been used to remove snow from the spot.

That unit was out of service Tuesday morning because it was damaged when it slipped off another sidewalk while removing snow on Sunday. Kaczynski said that vehicle has been repaired and it's back in operation.
