According to a news release issued by Police Chief John Ryan, a member of the department's Special Investigations Unit "encountered a male suspect armed with a handgun" at 4:43 p.m.
After a struggle, the police investigator fired a single gunshot at the man, wounding him in the ankle. The injured man was taken to a hospital for treatment. His name and condition were not released.
The police chief's statement indicated the investigator was treated at a hospital and released. The chief also said a handgun was recovered from the scene.
Binghamton police officers were assisted on Ambsbry Street by Broome County sheriff's deputies and state troopers.
Area police agencies were alerted to be on the lookout for a vehicle that was seen leaving the area of the shooting.
The vehicle being sought in connection with the investigation was found a short time later parked outside an apartment house on Court Street.
Several police units were sent to that location. Officers were observed entering the building at 211 Court Street.
Police brought a few people out of the house and searched the property.
Ryan said the suspect who was wounded on Amsbry Street is expected to face criminal charges.
The police chief said the investigation is continuing "in consultation with the Broome County District Attorney's Office."
