City to Take Control of Binghamton Plaza Property
The sprawling Binghamton Plaza property will soon belong to the city after a lengthy eminent domain battle.
Mayor Jared Kraham Wednesday announced the city will take ownership of the North Side site in several weeks. He said the city will take title to the property in early March.
The mayor said "pre-demolition work is underway" for what once was a thriving retail complex. He said most of the plaza will be demolished this year.
The city won its legal case against Galesi Realty Corporation, the New Jersey company that owns the property, in June 2024.
Kraham said the city has hired a Binghamton company to conduct environmental testing and develop a specific demolition plan for the site.
He said a Rochester planning firm will put together a feasibility study to determine future options for the property.
The mayor said the city is working with businesses still operating in the Binghamton Plaza on relocation plans.
Kraham said two buildings on the east side of the plaza property - one housing a daycare center, the other a convenience store - "will not be included in the demolition plans at this time."
