Binghamton Parking Garage Demolition to Start Soon
A massive demolition project in downtown Binghamton is expected to get underway in the next few weeks.
The city has awarded a contract for the removal of the old State Street parking garage to Gorick Construction. The Broome County company is to be paid about $2.5 million to tear down the closed structure.
Mayor Jared Kraham said the work on the project should start sometime in July.

The mayor told WNBF News the demolition job is expected to take six to eight months to complete.
He noted the parking structure includes several underground levels which extend 40 feet below the surface of the street. That will make this demolition different than any previous project in the city.
In recent years, the old Collier Street and Water Street parking ramps were torn down because they were no longer safe.

Kraham said several trespassing arrests have been made since the State Street garage was closed in early January.
He said there have been issues with people skateboarding or "hanging out" in the structure. He said he was unaware of any "major public safety issues" as a result of people entering the parking ramp in recent weeks.
Some of the large piles of trash that accumulated inside the garage shortly after it was shut down have been removed.

On Wednesday, there was evidence that people have been stealing some of the metal in sections of the structure.
The 12-level parking ramp opened for use in June 1970.
After the property has been cleared by demolition crews, the city is planning to open a surface parking lot on the site.
