Binghamton police are investigating an incident at an electrical substation that resulted in severe injuries to a person who had entered the site.

A man sustained significant burns after he was electrocuted at a small facility near the north entrance to the Charles Street Business Park in the First Ward.

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Monday near West Street and Field Street.

Initial reports indicated the man was on fire inside a fenced area at the substation. Firefighters and medics had to approach him with caution to avoid injury to themselves.

NYSEG workers responded to the site to deenergize the substation, enabling emergency crews to reach the injured man and take him to an ambulance.

The man who had sustained second- and third-degree burns was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. He was expected to be transferred to a burn center in Syracuse for treatment.

Police officers at the scene interviewed other people who may have accompanied the man into the substation.

Acting Police Chief John Ryan and detective Captain Cory Minor spoke with officers and investigators at the site. They were unable to immediately comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Although there have been ongoing problems with people stealing copper from area electrical installations, there apparently had been no recent incidents reported at the Charles Street substation.
