Abandoned Binghamton Factory Site to Be Redeveloped

The former E.H. Titchener manufacturing facility off Clinton Street in the city's First Ward has been sold by Broome County for $250,000. The site previously had been owned by Isaac Anzaroot, who at one point put forth plans to redevelop the property into a new facility for Galaxy Brewing Company. Mark Lane, president and CEO of William H. Lane Incorporated, is hoping transform the old eyesore into something productive. Since closing on the property several weeks ago, work has been done to clean up the site, inside and outside.

Bomb Squad Called to Binghamton West Side Residence

A Binghamton man was arrested after two incendiary devices were found at a home across the street from Seton Catholic Central High School. 24-year-old Isaiah O'Brien was taken into custody after police were sent to 83 Seminary Avenue on the city's West Side. Authorities said officers were dispatched to the single-family residence just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday after a family member discovered a suspicious item. After assessing the situation, officers requested assistance in properly disposing of a couple of incendiary devices. The Endicott Police Department bomb squad responded as a precaution. Two members of the bomb squad removed the items after a short time.

Broome County Secures $500,000 Grant For Infrastructure Study

On August 21, 2025, the Broome County Industrial Development Agency announced a $500,000 grant to launch a comprehensive study of power and wastewater infrastructure serving the towns of Maine and Union. The grant is through Empire State Development’s Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracts NY program. According to the announcement, this study will analyze the needed wastewater and power infrastructure upgrades that would support economic development in Broome County, including the proposed Broome Technology Park. The studies will focus on improving wastewater infrastructure near the Oakdale Commons and upgrading power capacity from NYSEG to power the Tech Park development.

Raub Guilty of Murder in Fire That Killed Binghamton Teen

A Susquehanna County man has been convicted on murder and arson counts in connection with a Binghamton house fire that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy. Jeremiah Raub was found guilty of three felony charges by a Broome County Court jury late Wednesday morning. Binghamton police arrested Raub in March 2023 in connection with the Milford Street blaze that killed Jeffrey Aissa. The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. on March 17, 2011. Six of the seven people who were inside the East Side home at the time of the blaze managed to escape. But Jeffrey died inside the burning house. Raub was convicted of one count of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree arson. This was his second trial in the case. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict in the first trial last January. The jury decided to convict Raub on all three charges after deliberating for only a few hours.

Binghamton Car Crash Blamed on Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Investigators have determined that a one-car crash in Binghamton that injured four people was linked to a faulty vehicle exhaust system. Police were sent to the Brandywine Highway around 2:20 p.m. Thursday to investigate a crash involving a single vehicle. When officers arrived, they discovered the vehicle was stopped in the driving lane of Route 363 on the bridge over Robinson Street. The car was occupied by two adults and two children, all of whom were unresponsive. Binghamton firefighters smashed a window to get inside the vehicle and remove the people. According to a Binghamton police news release, the people in the car live in Groton and were returning from a family trip. At one point, all four passed out in the vehicle, leading to the crash.

Governor Hochul Reports Decline In Shooting Incidents Statewide

According to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, shooting incidents with injuries dropped 14% over 7 months in communities participating in the Gun Violence Elimination initiative. There was a 21 percent decrease in shooting deaths compared to the same period in 2024, as reported by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.  Data comes from the 28 police departments outside of New York City participating in GIVE, including Binghamton, Ithaca, and Elmira in Tier 2. From January 1st through July 31st, 2025, reductions in shooting incidents with injury include Albany with a 53% decline, Buffalo, a 25% decline, NYC, almost a 20% decline, Syracuse, a 10% decline, and Rochester with an 8% decline.

Binghamton Church Moving to Former Weis Supermarket Site

City Church will be moving from its downtown site to a large multipurpose facility at 285 Main Street on the city's West Side. The church acquired the site between Mathews Street and Crestmont Road from Binghamton Giant Markets for $1.5 million four years ago. The site for many years was anchored by a Giant supermarket, which later was rebranded as a Weis store. Weis closed the location in 2014. Construction workers remain busy completing some of the finishing touches on the 50,000-square-foot complex. The dedication service for the new City Church campus is scheduled for Sunday, September 7 at 11 a.m.

Binghamton University's Next President Approved by SUNY Trustees

Binghamton University's next president has been selected by the State University of New York board of trustees. Anne D'Alleva will become the university's eighth president. She now is the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Connecticut. D'Alleva will succeed Harvey Stenger, who last October announced he planned to retire as Binghamton University president. Stenger has held the post since January 2012. D'Alleva is scheduled to start working as president on November 1. According to a SUNY news release, D'Alleva has been involved in efforts to expand the University of Connecticut's work in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
