Weather forecasters say people in the Binghamton area should prepare for some oppressive heat and humidity soon.

Summer will officially arrive in a few days and with it will come a significant increase in temperatures in the region.

David Nicosia, meteorologist-in-charge of the National Weather Service office at the Greater Binghamton Airport, said all of the computer models "are showing a very strong pattern for heat next week."

Speaking on WNBF Radio Tuesday, Nicosia said it seems that "there's no in-between" with the region's weather at this point. He said "it's either one extreme or the other," noting the area has had a lot of cool, rainy days recently.

Nicosia said starting Sunday and possibly running through Wednesday of next week, the Binghamton area may experience temperatures in the low to mid 90s in the valleys.

At the weather service office atop Mount Ettrick in the town of Maine, daytime highs might get into the low 90s during the period. Nicosia noted temperatures at the higher elevation won't be as hot as they'll be in valley locations.

Not only will temperatures be higher next week but the humidity will increase. He said that means the heat indices in the region "will be challenging 100 or maybe even the low 100s."
