You may have heard the statement or own the t-shirt stating "Binghamton University Football, Undefeated Since 1949." Obviously a joke since the University has never had a football team.

New Sport Coming To Binghamton University

That is about to change. Well, not exactly a contact football team, but rather an NCAA Women's Varsity Flag Football team, and that is exciting news. According to the announcement today, Friday, February 20, 2026, the timeline for the first season will be in the spring of 2028.

During the press conference, it was noted that flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, including at the high school and college levels. Locally, there are several Section IV high schools that field flag football teams. The 2028 Summer Olympics will be adding flag football to the roster of sporting events.

If you are not familiar with flag football, BU Athletics explains that it is a 7-on-7 game played on an 80'x40' field, consisting of four 12-minute quarters. Players wear flag belts with sockets and two pop-up flags on either side of their hips. A touchdown is good for 6 points, and it's an extra point for a conversion from the five-yard line or two extra points for a conversion from the 10-yard line.

With the NCAA's decision to add women's flag football as an emerging sport, this is the perfect time to provide a wonderful opportunity for our talented young ladies to compete in the sport. It's one of the fastest-growing sports, and I believe it will be a great addition to Bearcat Athletics. We also look forward to exploring a partnership with the ECAC as we begin to develop this program. - Eugene Marshall, Jr., Director of Binghamton University Athletics

According to the announcement, the new team will hold practice and play games at the  Bearcats Sports Complex East Field. The Complex is also used for the soccer and lacrosse programs. Flag football season runs from January to May with a total of 12 games.

With a new team, Binghamton University Athletics will be in the hunt for a head coach, followed by recruiting student-athletes for the team. The announcement also added that it's possible that practice and informal competitions could begin in the spring of 2027, and the inaugural intercollegiate season would begin in the spring of 2028.
