Binghamton CVS Building Being Repaired in Preparation for Sale
A prominent downtown Binghamton building that's been vacant for years may soon have a new owner.
CVS has been trying to sell the three-story structure at 34 Court Street where it had operated a retail store and pharmacy for several decades. The property was listed for $875,000.
The CVS operation closed in November 2021. There had been a drug store at the Court Street site for 97 years.
Last July, orange barricades were set up on the sidewalk in front of the building after part of its parapet wall fell on it.
The city of Binghamton issued an emergency order and a notice of violation to the property owner. Deputy mayor Megan Heiman said the owner would be required to hire an engineer to assess and address the problem.
A Binghamton real estate agent said the property is under contract but a sale is not imminent. The prospective buyer still has several weeks to do its due diligence before deciding to acquire the building.
The name of the company considering buying the site hasn't been announced. Representatives of that firm have not returned phone calls seeking comment on their plans if they do acquire the building.
Workers have been busy setting up scaffolding in recent days as they prepare to clean and remove the wood cornice the upper portion of the building. Plans also call for resizing the parapet.
