Gasoline prices in the Southern Tier and across New York state have jumped significantly over the last several weeks.

According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for a gallon of regular gas increased by 16 cents in the past month in the Binghamton market.

A similar price spike has occurred in other parts of the state. The average pump price rose more than 8 cents a gallon across New York in the past week alone. The increase in the Binghamton area was slightly less over the last week.

Industry analysts point to increases in crude oil prices as a big factor in the ongoing trend toward costlier gasoline.

The increases have been even more dramatic in California. The average price for regular gas in that state soared by almost 25 cents a gallon over the past week.

California prices have been affected by problems at refineries that supply that state's gas stations.

Despite the recent increases in the Binghamton area, average local gas prices remain $1.15 a gallon lower than they were a year ago.
