The April 27 edition of WNBF's local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up literally goes to the dogs!

BC Humane Society spokesperson, Laura Melville and spokesdog, Gabby (shown here greeting Bob Joseph) took control of the show, making for a very lively and interesting program while somehow getting the word out about the work of the shelter.

Melville says there has been a big jump in cruelty cases being handled lately by the Jackson Street, Binghamton shelter. That has also resulted in a big increase in veterinary and other costs for the Humane Society.

Melville says the shelter has dozens of adoptable dogs and cats and expects another big jump in homeless cats and kitten season gets underway.

The Humane Society has a number of fund-raising events coming up to help the agency cover expenses of food, shelter and veterinary care, including a golf tournament, a sanction 5K 'Wag, Walk and Run' and the rubber ducky Duck Derby.  The September Duck Derby carries cash prizes up to even $1 million.

You can contact the BC Humane Society by calling (607) 724-3709 on their website at www.bchumanesoc.com and at their facebook page.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturday afternoons at 12:10 on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
