NYS Police Warn Of Rising Phone And Computer Scams
Scammers continue to devise innovative methods to steal money from unsuspecting individuals. The latest warning comes from the New York State Police, which has recently been receiving an increasing number of complaints from victims of computer and phone scams.
According to the New York State Police Troop C Headquarters, several persons have been targeted in the Otsego County area. It's reported that some have lost thousands of dollars, and some have lost their life savings.

New York State Police Investigators noted that a victim from Sidney, New York, reported they got a pop-up alert on their computer that appeared to be from Apple with a phone number to dial for help.
The victim called the number where a scammer told the victim that their account was linked to child pornography, their identity was compromised, and their personal information was on the dark web.
The victim was told to contact another number. The scammer told the victim the number was the U.S Department of the Treasury’s Anti-Fraud Division. Scammers sent a courier to the victim’s house to pick up payment to allegedly fix the problem.
New York State Police Troop C reminds New Yorkers not to fall for these scams where the scammer tries to manipulate the victim's emotions, creating urgency to push them into giving them money, gold bars, bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.
Also, never share personal information, and a real tech company will not ask a person to call a phone number.
