Investigators believe a Vestal woman may have intentionally caused a three-car crash in Endicott.

Authorities say 48-year-old Melissa Smith was charged with reckless endangerment and driving while impaired by drugs. Smith also faces several other counts, including speeding and reckless driving.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, a car driven by Smith broadsided a vehicle at the intersection of Watson Boulevard and North McKinley Avenue shortly after noon Sunday. Smith's car then is said to have struck another vehicle head-on.

Investigators say the collisions happened when Smith passed several vehicles in a left-turn only lane and raced through a red light.

Officials say based on statements made by Smith, she "intentionally caused" the crashes.

Smith was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment of a hand injury. She was ordered to appear in Union town court at a future date.
