Volunteers to Harvest Potato Crop in West Corners

Hundreds of people, including many students, are expected to harvest thousands of pounds of potatoes in West Corners to help area food pantries.

The potato-growing initiative has been a project of the Southern Tier Antique Tractor Club over the past several years.

Club spokesman Jim Baker said volunteers are invited to stop by the fields Friday and Saturday to pitch in.

The fields are located off Route 26 across from the Ann McGuinness Elementary School. The harvesting work will start around 9 a.m. both days.

Students from area schools have helped to fill buckets and barrels with potatoes in recent years. More than 100 Seton Catholic Central students and their families are planning to help on Saturday.

About 43,000 pounds of potatoes were donated to agencies like the Southern Tier Food Bank and the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse last year. Baker said the 2016 harvest was smaller than usual because of a dry growing season.
