Demolition crews are busy hauling away what remains of a Vestal hotel and a popular restaurant that was located in the complex.

Gorick Construction began the process of tearing down the old Quality Inn on the Vestal Parkway at Bunn Hill Road in August.

The building, which had been home to the Fuji San Japanese restaurant, has been knocked down. The slow, methodical process of clearing debris from the site is continuing.

A $70 million luxury student housing complex is to be constructed on the site, which is located directly across the Parkway from the Binghamton University campus.

Several dozen homeless people were moved from the hotel to other locations in May in preparation for the demolition work.

Aptitude Development of New Jersey plans to operate a 516-bed facility on the site.

Developer Jared Hutter did not return a call seeking comment on the status of the housing project Friday.

Hutter last month told WNBF News that he expected construction of the new complex would start before winter. He said the project is scheduled to be completed in mid-2027.

The Vestal Parkway development will be located about two miles north of a 700-bed student housing community now under construction. That $6.8 million project on a 44-acre site off Bunn Hill Road is scheduled to open next August.
