Police: Man Armed with Knife Shot by Officer at Vestal Residence
Authorities say a man who was armed with a knife was shot by police in a Vestal neighborhood.
According to a New York State Police news release, Vestal police officers were sent to the area of 581 Sequoia Lane shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A man who was seen with a knife was said to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered the armed man who was threatening to harm himself.
According to police, the man ignored commands to drop the knife and threw a television at officers.
Despite efforts to deescalate the situation, the man allegedly threatened officers and raised the knife. An officer then shot the man, who was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
The man's name and condition have not been released. No police officers were hurt in the incident.
According to the news release, Vestal police have asked the state police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
A man who lives nearby told WNBF News "we're completely shocked" by what happened in the normally-tranquil neighborhood.
