A newly-constructed building that will house the Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad should be ready for use within the next few weeks.

The town's ambulance service has operated out of a former community center site on Myrtle Street in Twin Orchards since 1976.

Work on the $2 million project to provide a modern facility for the organization is nearing completion. A federal grant is expected to cover most of the project's cost.

The new building is located on the Vestal Parkway East between the Route 26 interchange and the Vestal Public Library.

Construction initially was expected to get underway in 2020 but it didn't start until early last year. Various factors slowed the project, including delays in the delivery of needed materials.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Vestal town supervisor John Schaffer said he believed the new facility could be operational in a couple of weeks. But an emergency squad representative indicated it might take a bit longer. He said some "finishing touches" are needed before the building can be put into service.

Schaffer said when the old squad building is empty, it will be used as a new Vestal police substation.
