Big traffic backups are expected on two key roadways in Vestal as a pavement repair project continues.

Drivers encountered delays on Monday as the urgent work got underway on the Vestal Parkway near the Binghamton University entrance.

One westbound lane of the parkway was closed while crews started the project near the Route 201 entrance and exit ramps.

No work was done in the area on Tuesday. But the state Department of Transportation is warning motorists that operations are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

The paving repair job on the parkway - Route 434 - also will affect drivers using Route 201 between Vestal and Johnson City.

People traveling south on Route 201 will be unable to use the exit to the westbound lanes of the parkway while the work is underway. They'll be detoured onto Vestal Road and Bunn Hill Road instead.

Westbound motorists on the parkway won't be able to exit onto Route 201 to travel to Johnson City. They'll need to use Vestal Road to get to Route 201.

Paving operations on Wednesday are scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Drivers - including shoppers and students - who don't want to be delayed should plan to use alternate routes.
