Broome County Sheriff's officials are investigating an incident that started with a driver failing to comply with a Vestal Police traffic stop on the Vestal Parkway near the California Grill restaurant at 3:42 a.m. September 20 and escalated into a pursuit and a head-on crash on the George F. Highway.

UPDATE:  Authorities report they arrested 25-year-old Shawn Kiehle, "hiding in the trees near Traditions at the Glen" following the crash.

Authorities say the wrong-way driver traveled on Route 434 to Route 26 where the vehicle continued traveling North in the Southbound lane toward Endicott at a high rate of speed and the pursuit was discontinued.

At 3:55 a.m. police and fire were headed to a head-on crash at the underpass known as Grey's Crossing that takes traffic from Watson Boulevard onto the George F. Highway (17C) westbound into Endwell.

One of the vehicles was reported on fire and the occupant of the wrong way vehicle fled the scene on foot.

An occupant of the other vehicle appeared to have suffered a minor injury and medical crews responded to the scene and was taken to Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Broome County Sheriff's officials say they located Kiehle on Watson Boulevard and took him into custody.

He is charged with two felony counts of reckless endangerment as well as misdemeanor charges of unlawfully fleeing a police officer, unlicensed operation and reckless driving and ticketed for numerous traffic violations.  Kiehle was also found to be wanted on a New York State Parole Warrant.

He was sent to the Broome County Jail.
