UHS Moves Forward on Massive Wilson Medical Center Project

State regulators have authorized a $132 million expansion and renovation project at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

United Health Services officials have been planning the work for several years.

The Broome County Local Development Corporation Wednesday accepted an application that could permit the issuance of up to $295 million in bonds. A portion of that borrowing would be used for the Wilson project. UHS may also refinance existing debt with the bond issuance.

A key part of the project would involve the relocation of the hospital's emergency department. UHS president John Carrigg has said the new facility would have a "huge drive-up" entrance that would provide access from Main Street.

The expansion would add 183,375 square feet to the Wilson Medical Center campus.

UHS also plans to construct a magnetic resonance imaging lab and a medical surgical patient unit with private rooms.

A new helipad on the roof over the emergency department is to be constructed to replace the current landing site now located on top of a Baldwin Street parking garage.
