Two Charged in Sex Abuse Case Involving 8-Year-Old Girl

A man and woman have been arrested in Cortland County in an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl.

Authorities say 36-year-old Chad Rackett and 32-year-old Catherine MacGibbon face charges in connection with inappropriate contact at their home in the town of Cortlandville.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office, Rackett and MacGibbon were arrested Monday.

Rackett has been charged with third-degree aggravated sex abuse, a felony. MacGibbon was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

Investigators say Rackett is MacGibbon's boyfriend. They say the eight-year-old girl was in the care of Rackett and MacGibbon, she was subjected to inappropriate contact.

Officials did not reveal when the alleged incident is believed to have occurred or when it was reported.

The suspects were arraigned in Cortlandville town court Monday afternoon. They were released on their own recognizance.

MacGibbon is to return to court on August 19 and Rackett is to return on August 21.
