Police say a woman who was supposed to be overseeing the funds of a Vestal youth sports organization has been arrested after the money vanished.

Investigators say 47-year-old Sandra Scharnikow of Schuyler Street in the town of Union has been charged with grand larceny.

Officials with the Vestal Recreational Youth Soccer Association contacted town police after discovering issues with the group's funds.

Police say Scharnikow was cooperative when she was interviewed by a detective.

Investigators believe about $17,400 was taken by the woman.

Scharnikow was arraigned on January 31 and released on her own recognizance.

The case now is expected to be handled by Broome County Court.

Vestal police say no additional charges are likely to be filed and no other arrests are anticipated.
