Tires Slashed on Government Vehicles in Binghamton Parking Ramp
Several city and federal government cars were targeted in a tire-slashing spree in a downtown Binghamton parking garage.
Employees of the city-owned facility on State Street reported the vandalism to police Monday morning.
The exact number of tires damaged at the garage could not be immediately be determined. But police initially were said to be investigating incidents involving seven city-owned cars and two vehicles belonging to the federal government.
Three tires of a sport utility vehicle owned by a downtown business also were slashed.
Police make routine patrols through the three city-owned parking facilities. It was not known when the tires were slashed or whether more than one person may have been involved.
Vandalism and smash-and-grab vehicle break-ins have been a persistent problem at the State Street garage, which has twelve parking levels, including four underground.
Signs at the facility advised users that vehicle users park there at their own risk. The warnings make it clear that no one is responsible for fire, theft or damage to vehicles.
Although there are a couple of security cameras on the street level of the garage, there is no video surveillance throughout most of the facility.
In recent weeks, more skateboarders and homeless people have been seen in the parking ramp. Police officers direct them to leave the facility when they are observed.
