While warmer weather lately may shift many people’s attention away from winter sports, authorities still are warning about the dangers of ice conditions.

This comes as New York State Police responded to the Erie Canal at 4:09 p.m. March 9 when an ice fisherman fell through the ice and was submerged in the water. 

67-year-old Robert Barnes of Rome died at Rome Memorial Hospital.

While most area rivers and streams are clear of ice at this point, there may be some ponds, lakes and other bodies of water with remaining ice cover.

Authorities say with warming days and cool nights, ice is very unstable and should not be trusted to hold weight.
