A final ruling on the thickness and quality of the ice at the Whitney Point reservoir is expected February 12, determining if the “Almost Annual New York State Crappie Derby” can take place February 17.

Board member, Thomas Decker says, so far, the ice is looking good even though it is now covered with snow, making it harder to access points for ice measurements.

The Crappie Derby, which draws thousands of hopeful ice-anglers to Whitney Point for fishing and non-fishing activities has been canceled over the past couple of years due to poor weather and ice conditions.

This year, Dick’s Sporting Goods is back on board and has been taking pre-registration at its locations on Court Street, Binghamton and the Town Square Mall in Vestal.

Current conditions and the status of the tournament can be found at the official website: http://www.crappiederby.com/.
